Lysine, Methionine & Threonine are known as rate-limiting amino acids. They are required in the horse’s diet because they cannot be made in the body. Of the 21 amino acids that exist, these three are most commonly deficient in the horse’s diet.
Amino acids are the molecular building blocks of proteins. Proteins have many functions in the body; they form structural components of cells, act as hormones and act as enzymes that carry out metabolic processes.
Horses that have inadequate protein or amino acid intake might experience:
• Poor hoof and coat quality
• Persistent fatigue
• Slow recovery from illness
• Loss of muscle mass
When an essential amino acid is deficient to the point of limiting protein synthesis, it is called a “limiting” amino acid. Lysine, Threonine, & Methionine are typically considered the first, second, and third limiting amino acids in equine diets.
L-LYSINE
Lysine maintains healthy skin and joints in horses by forming strong collagen bonds, supports protein synthesis and efficient energy production in horses.
• Supports muscle maintenance and post-exercise care
• Contributes to joint function in exercising and aging horses
• Helps maintain normal immune function and energy metabolism
• Important for calcium absorption and bone health
L-METHIONINE
Methionine is important for maintaining healthy hooves, tendons and ligaments, and supporting coat quality. Growing horses and heavily exercised horses have a high demand for methionine and benefit from supplementation.
• Essential for keratin formation and healthy hoof growth
• Helps maintain healthy connective tissue and cartilage
• Required for the production of glutathione – a key antioxidant
• Supports post-exercise care and resistance to illness and stress
L-THREONINE
Threonine supports gut health, immune function, and protein synthesis in horses. Threonine is beneficial for growing horses, performance horses and those requiring additional gut support.
• Aids in mucin production to support a healthy gut lining
• Maintains nutrient absorption and feed efficiency
• Contributes to muscle growth and maintenance
• Involved in collagen and elastin production
